A Christmas Rock Opera

BRIGHTEST AND BEST
Brightest and best of the sons of the morning
Shine on our darkness and send us your aid
Star of the east the horizon is dawning
Guide where our infant redeemer is laid.
We met out on the Great Silk Road, a night of many stars
Astrologers who never met before
We believed the signs foretold but we knew only part
Of little known or long forgotten lore
By chance it seemed, we met that night, encamped upon the plain
Behold, a star was shining like a gem.
Jupiter and Venus bright high above us shone
We knew that we must see Jerusalem
We rode in through the city gate and lodged our caravan
We dined with merchants telling of our quest
“Your new king must be sent by fate; we’ve come to worship him,
For we have seen his star out in the west.”
The rumor spread throughout the town, like fire it gave alarm
A guard was sent before us to escort
Us to Herod in his crown, a scepter on his arm
And this is what we said before the court:
“Jupiter reveals a king, the heavens tell the news
Joined with Venus this must mean a child.”
We asked Herod, “Where is he, born king of the Jews?”
Herod did seem troubled, but he smiled.
“Welcome, magi, from afar,” said Herod on his throne,
“Though we have only rumors of your fame.
Tell me wise men, who you are, and tell from whence you came,
And how you gained the knowledge you proclaim.”
“We are the brightest and the best sages of our time-
though we live in darkness, this is clear.
Upon our quest we will not rest, for we have seen a sign.
Hear now how our journeys brought us here.”

STAR OF WONDER
After we told everything
We asked about the newborn king
We thought it strange they did not know
So we prepared our steeds to go.
Secretly King Herod called
Summoned us to private halls
And asked what time the start appeared
Shaking hands betrayed his fear
Star of wonder star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading still proceeding
Guide us to thy perfect light
He bade us tell him when we knew
So he could come and worship too
Something in his voice was wrong
We knew we could not tarry long.
On we went and to our joy
The star had led us to a boy
Falling down, we worshipped there
Giving treasures we prepared.
He did not want the priests to know
So quietly he bade us go
Quietly to search around
Bethlehem until we found
One of whom the prophets tell
Shepherd of all Israel
Out of Bethlehem will come
The ruler of the whole kingdom
Star of Wonder Star of Night,
Star with royal beauty bright,
Westward leading, still proceeding,
Guide us to thy perfect light.

GOLD I BRING
We did not expect to greet humble shepherds
We did not expect a treacherous king
We thought the Christ would be born in a palace
This child in a stable has changed everything
Born a king of Bethlehem’s plain
Gold I bring to crown Him again
King forever ceasing never
Over us all to reign
Vainly we offer each humble oblation
Vainly with gifts His favor secure
Nearer to God is the heart’s adoration
Dearer to God are the prayers of the poor
The Lord of creation has emptied Himself
Becoming a servant- He doesn’t need gold,
But I will give all I have that is precious
For joy that cannot be bartered or sold.
Born a king of Bethlehem’s plain
Gold I bring to crown Him again
King forever ceasing never
Over us all to reign

FRANKINCENSE TO OFFER HAVE I
Frankincense to offer have I
Incense owns a deity nigh
Prayer and praising all men raising
Worship the Lord Most High
If our gifts mean anything
Is it not the spirit they bring?
Through our senses our defenses
Surrender everything
Worship Him, God Most High
Prayer and praising all men raising
Incense owns a deity nigh
Frankincense to offer have I

MYRRH IS MINE
Cold on his cradle
The dewdrops forming
Low lies his head with the beasts of the stall
Angels adore him in slumber reclining
Maker and monarch, and Lord over all
Lord over all
Myrrh is mine its bitter perfume
Breathes a light of gathering gloom
Sorrowing sighing bleeding dying
Sealed in a stone cold tomb
A dream sent from heaven
Brought us warning
Not to return to the wicked king’s hall
May all our reason both evening and morning
Always be guided by the Lord over all
Lord over all
Death may be coming
With weeping and crying
Slaughter of children, many will fall
Mercy is mingled with weeping and crying
A mystery known to the Lord over all
Lord over all
Myrrh is mine its bitter perfume
Breathes a light of gathering gloom
Sorrowing sighing bleeding dying
Sealed in a stone cold tomb

WELCOME TO EARTH
From Heaven high above I come this night to you
Glad tidings of great joy I bring
I bring to Bethlehem these tidings good and new
Whereof I now will say and sing
Welcome to Earth Thou noble guest
In whom the sinful world is blessed
(In my distress Thou comest to me
What gifts shall I return to Thee?)
These tokens ye shall mark
Swaddling clothes a manger dark
There shall ye find the infant laid
Behold the virgin shall bear a son
Emmanuel he is the one
By Whom the heavens and Earth were made
Welcome to Earth Thou noble guest
In whom the sinful world is blessed
Now let us all go forth with grateful gladsome cheer
From nearly field and distant road
Go with the shepherds and the magi drawing near
To see the precious gift bestowed
Welcome to Earth Thou noble guest
In whom the sinful world is blessed
This is the Christ Messiah Jesus God and Lord
He will Himself your savior be
Who in all need and for all time shall aid the poor
From all your sins to set you free.
